Has everyone forgot about the Red Sox. They have the best pitching in the league with starters: Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield, and Julian Tavarez. They have arguably the best bullpen as well with Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, and closer Johnathon Papelbon. 3 of these pitchers also happened to be all-stars. The Red Sox are also 4th in the league in defense. Thats why they happen to hold the best record in the MLB.
I’m loving the red sox right now. I can’t say they have the best defense, but it’s good. and the pitching is doing really well now. we have a bunch of good starters and a great bullpen.
San Diego has the best pitching in the majors. They lead the league in ERA and lets face it, Petco Park is a pitchers park. I am unsure of who is the best overall defensive team but there are a bunch of great defensive players.
San Diego and Oakland are close for the pitching, but I would say San Diego, Chris Young has the best ERA in the majors (1.97), then Jake Peavy is second in the league in ERA (2.19), David Wells has a 4.15 ERA, and then Greg Maddux has a 4.35 ERA. Then the A’s which are very close I am actually changing my mind now, I think the A’s do. Dan Haren leads the AL, with a 2.30 ERA and a record of 10-3. Then Chad Gaudin is 8-4 with a 3.18 ERA. Then Joe Blanton is 8-6 with a 3.36 ERA.
As of today July 17, the Colorado Rockies have the best defense in the major leagues. This is demonstrated by their league leading .990 fielding percentage and league fewest 37 errors.
The pitching question is harder to answer. The San Diego Padres have the best ERA in the Majors at 3.11. This is due in part to their pitcher friendly park and the fact that they play in the National League, where there is no designated hitter.
The Oakland A’s have the second best ERA at 3.71. It is higher because they play in the DH using American League. They are also in a division that has such great hitters as Ichiro Suzuki and Vladimir Guerrero.
As a manager, I would choose the pitching staff of the Oakland A’s.

Padres have the best pitching. They have great starters and a dominant bullpen.
Defense is a tough one but ill say Mets when Jose Valentin and Carlos Gomez are playing.
