Baseball is basically one of America’s favorite sports, if not the most favorite sport that is. Baseball dated a long way back in the history of American sports that can even be traced back in the eighteenth century. There were certain major leagues that have been established and has revolutionized through the years, which include the Negro’s League, which was practically established in the 1920’s, and the Negro American League in 1951. The National League Baseball has been considered as one of the most prestigious leagues in baseball. It was well participated by different popular teams from the different states of the United States. Another very important league in major league baseball is the American League, which has fourteen participating teams in 2009. Indeed, baseball has revolutionized into one of the most important national sports over the years.
However, there was an era in baseball history wherein there was a decline in the interest and in the participation of baseball as a sport. This was certainly one of the times that were considered as the “dead ball” era for baseball, so much so that the organizers felt that something has to be done in order to retrieve the national interest for baseball.
It was during this time, that football was becoming more popular, and baseball was then considered as their grandfather’s sport. Definitely, this has been alarming to the major league baseball organizers. Fortunately, the organizers came up with the idea of introducing a logo that would bring back baseball into the map, thus, the creation of the MLB logo sometime in 1968.
The major league baseball organizers commissioned an agency to come up with the MLB logo that would embody the sports dynamic essence. Jerry Dior, who was then a graphic designer of a New York-based marketing company, designed the MLB logo. The MLB logo that Dior designed was a major success. It was definitely something that people could easily recognize, which makes it an advantage because people would then easily associate the logo with baseball. The logo is a silhouette of a batter who is poised to swing at a ball. The colors that were used exude excitement and fire, which actually embody what baseball is all about. The silhouette is set on a background with the colors red and blue.
The MLB logo made its first appearance in the 1969 World Series as the New York Mets used the logo in their team uniforms that season. The logo definitely made a blast as different sport logos have been patterned after it in the following years. Another popular sport organization that embraced the MLB logo is the National Basketball Association, which used a similar concept in their logo. It was definitely seen in almost anything like helmets, caps, jerseys, wristbands, and even on stadium walls. It has become a craze and a fad among Americans; and the nice thing about it, is that it has brought back the national interest and the genuine love for baseball in the United States.
Major League Baseball made a switch in its authentic on-field jersey supplier from Russell Athletic to Majestic for the 2005 season. Currently, all authentic jerseys include the MLB logo on the back of the neck. For a few years before that (i.e. the end of the Russell Athletic era), though, the MLB logo was also included. Does anyone know what year this was started?
